Storage is one of the most requested features of any remodeling project, and for good reason; it can be especially limited in older St. Louis homes. And even a good amount of storage, if it’s not organized and optimized, likely isn’t serving you as well as it could. The design team at Dana King will work with you and our trusted organization partners to help you create the best-possible storage plan. Envision a future where you can put something away one day and then find it weeks later without struggle!

So, how does Dana King Design-Build Remodeling approach maximizing storage while keeping it creative and accessible?
1- Elevate Your Thinking: When square-footage is at a minimum, we think vertically. Vertical drawers alongside an oven can house spices and cooking oils. Bookcases, shelves and compartments on either side of window seat, fireplaces, or in closets can extend your storage to the moon.

2- See Through Walls: Recessed storage in interior walls is a great way to gain storage without losing any square footage, and can take the form of recessed medicine cabinets, wall niches for additional bathroom storage, or built-in bookcases. We can see through walls, and love creating solutions where none were possible.
3- Add Built-Ins: Instead of traditional dining table and chairs, how about a banquette with built-in storage drawers or compartments? Or what about using that over-looked cabinet toe-kick space for robot vacuum storage? Finding ways to get double duty from a space is a challenge we love to take on.

4- Plan for Pull-Outs: You might have plenty of cabinets, but if your storage space isn’t optimized, or if it’s cumbersome to use, then pull-out shelves and drawers can make the existing space more functional and organized. No room for a pantry closet? No problem! We often incorporate pull-out pantry shelves into the cabinetry layout plan.

5- Move Mechanicals: Instead of mechanical home elements hampering your storage creativity (plumbing, HVAC vents, or electrical wiring), we can decide early in the process to move them strategically out of the way to open up additional space. Recessed plumbing for wall-mounted, tankless toilets; toe-kick air vents; and outlets near toilets for future bidet installation are all solutions we frequently utilize to increase open floor space.

6- Hide It: What do you do when something unflattering is absolutely necessary in the space, but you don’t want it to steal the show? Concealing awkward or bulky elements behind cabinetry or custom screens allows a seamless integration that also often creates additional horizontal space for storage. Custom cabinetry with door screens can be built around old cast-iron radiators in a bathroom, with additional counter space on top– giving you function and beauty!

At Dana King Design-Build Remodeling, we think storage should be more than just drawers and closets. Thoughtful design of those spaces will help you live better at home, and we’re here to help you optimize and organize!
