This Edwardsville kitchen & bath remodel was a huge glow-up, not only doubling the usable square footage, but adding creamy white cabinets and an enormous dark stained island, full height quartz backsplash, and new appliances and fixtures.
Homeowners, Robin and Chris, knew when they bought this house they would eventually remodel it.
“Our kitchen was too small and we were basically cooking in the dark.” – Robin

Establishing Kitchen & Bath Remodeling Goals
Working with Dana King Design Build Remodeling designer, Renna Barnes, the homeowners established the primary goal of expanding the kitchen to give them more storage, a functional layout, and more lighting.

Creating the Design Concept
By utilizing some space from the oversized garage, Renna and the homeowners were able to collaboratively come up with a design and layout that removed the walls that closed off the kitchen, added lots of cabinetry, open shelves, and created a focal point of the room: an enormous dark stained island topped with an entire slab of luxurious Dolce Vita marble.

Design Completion with Curated Finishes
Once the new kitchen concept design was determined, cabinetry was customized to function the way the homeowners wanted. They still loved a traditional kitchen, but wanted a cabinet style that was versatile with mid-century elements, so they selected shaker style doors.
Because they love to cook, we were able to incorporate features to make their lives better: a mixer lift stand, trash organization, and pull-outs for cooking supplies in close proximity to the cooktop and sink.

“I really like the pull-outs on either side of the stove, where we are able to put all of the spices, our oils, knives, cutting boards.”

With functionality optimized, finishes and colors were incorporated to bring warmth and character. Creamy white shaker-style cabinetry paired with mixed hardware in a consistent gold finish gives the kitchen a curated and timeless look.

Homeowner, Robin, fell quickly in love with GE Cafe appliances in matte white, and the gold handles coordinate beautifully with the other gold accents in the space. The combination of similar light tones in a variety of materials throughout the kitchen remodel highlights unique and natural textures for a tone-on-tone aesthetic.
The new hall bathroom created from the expansion into the garage maximized every available inch. Mixing metals and subtle mid-century design details make this space feel intentional and interesting.

Beyond the Kitchen: Modern Primary Bathroom
Besides the traditional kitchen area remodel, Robin and Chris really wanted a proper primary suite in their Edwardsville home. Their large primary bedroom didn’t have a bathroom so the DK team gave them an eye-catching modern primary bathroom with dramatic green tiles.

Artfully designed, this primary bathroom boasts mid-century inspired light fixtures, a makeup vanity, a large vanity and linen closet tower, a 6 foot soaking tub, walk-in shower, and a towel warming rack!

“Working with Renna and her ability to really maximize what we can do in our space, that was really nice. It was good to be able to rely on her for all those details because there are things that wouldn’t have happened if (she) hadn’t been there.
