This home remodeling project in O’Fallon showcases examples of how our design team considers scale in interior design. Whether bringing in items or removing items, the biggest impact is created when what remains is the right scale in relation to the room.
Our clients, Greg and Angela, came to us wanting to update their living room and foyer so they would look ‘finished’. They wanted to make strategic changes that would look elegant for years, and allow versatility with existing or new furniture.
Living Room Updates
Before the interior design project got started, the living room had white walls and a cream fireplace. Furniture and accessories were tones of gray and white mostly.
Interior designer, Rachel Pereira, came up with a plan to make the fireplace a true focal point. By working with most of the existing furniture, she was able to focus the budget on timeless additions: moulding on the fireplace wall, painted a contrasting color for depth; and large scale artwork with picture lights on either side of the fireplace.
The digital rendering put the clients’ mind at ease for the dramatic changes to come, as it also illustrated the importance of multiple sources of light.
Lamps, wall picture lights, and can ceiling lights all work together to create a cozy and inviting atmosphere.
Rachel worked with Angela to select a rug that was the right scale for the room size, illustrating how the larger size provided an anchor for the furniture arrangement. This also made the room look larger. Adding in a larger scale leather lounge chair and ottoman, was another selection that balances out that corner of the room.
Finally, we were more selective with the decorative objects on the fireplace, added in a variety of textures, and repeated earth-toned colors throughout the room. The repetition of color and texture creates visual harmony.
Foyer Updates
For the foyer, homeowner, Angela, felt there was a lot of gray-toned things that needed to be balanced out and better storage was desired. Both Greg and Angela wanted a elegant and sophisticated look in their foyer that coordinated with the rest of their home.
The gray ‘leggy’ console was swapped with a warm-toned storage console, with ample space for shoes and bags. Other updates included a larger scale chandelier, a larger rug that didn’t compete with pattern and color, and a pair of tall, framed landscape paintings that fill out the wall space better. The homeowner herself painted the artwork!
Decorative objects were scaled back and simplified, allowing the artwork to be the focal point.
The result took time, collaboration, and trust, but both our design team and clients are thrilled with the result!
“It is so gorgeous. You were spot on about going dark on the fireplace. The wall is gorgeous, the colors, the trim. I love it!”
Angela, Homeowner
